In recent years, the dramatic fluctuations in lithium prices have made the industry chain experience the "bittersweet" of the market. Although current lithium prices are far from their past highs, the prospects of the new energy industry chain remain bright under the global advocacy for a low-carbon economy, and the importance of lithium resources is becoming increasingly prominent.
As one of the regions with the richest lithium resources globally, South America, especially the "Lithium Triangle" (Bolivia, Argentina, Chile), holds over 55% of the world's proven lithium resources. Therefore, South America's lithium resources play a crucial role in the global energy transition.
Against this backdrop, SMM organized the 2024 South America Lithium Resources Field Trip. Led by SMM Customer Manager Siyu Chen, the delegation visited lithium-related enterprises in South America from November 26 to December 7, 2024, toured local lithium mines and material companies, and held discussions with company executives to explore potential opportunities in lithium ore resources development, technical exchanges, and investment cooperation. On the afternoon of November 29, SMM and the delegation headed to the Secretariat of Mining and Energy of Salta, Argentina, for in-depth exchanges.
Corporate Voices
SMM and the delegation arrived at the Secretariat of Mining and Energy of Salta, where Secretary General Romina Sassarini warmly received the delegation and provided a detailed introduction to their business development.
The region boasts a sound institutional framework, clear legal policies, and significant geological advantages. Due to its high safety, predictability, and abundant geological resources, it is considered an ideal location for mining investment. Salta's lithium resources mainly exist in brine form, offering cost advantages. Additionally, the province is rich in other minerals such as borates, gold, silver, copper, and uranium.
Currently, Salta has six approved lithium projects, three under construction, and 28 in advanced exploration stages, with the first production expected by the end of 2024 or 2025. Of the six projects, five produce lithium carbonate, while one starts with lithium chloride but aims to produce lithium carbonate. Some of Salta's mining projects are expected to be put into operation in H1 next year after environmental assessments, while others have been in operation for four years. In terms of cooperation, Salta has formed a committee with Jujuy and Catamarca to jointly address challenges in the lithium industry. Each province works together based on provincial plans.
Technical Exchanges
SMM and the delegation had in-depth exchanges with the Secretariat of Mining and Energy of Salta on long-term business, policies, resources, and projects.
Regarding the progress and governance of Salta's mining sector, both parties discussed various aspects such as information system development, employment incentives, administrative procedure simplification, supplier platform establishment, project products, review, and supervision. The Salta Mining Department stated that its information platform is currently under development and is expected to be put into use in 2025. Once operational, it will be accessible without registration; employment incentives have recorded 35 consecutive months of growth, encouraging foreign investment and creating local job opportunities; legal norms and regulations for mining investment can be accessed via a website link, enhancing application transparency and speed; the simplification of administrative procedures has made all processes and applications for mining investment faster, more convenient, and more systematic, reducing waiting times and creating value for local enterprises; additionally, a platform for local suppliers has been created to facilitate mining companies' access and digitize the supplier list.
Group Photo
After visiting the factory, SMM and the delegation took a group photo with the Secretariat of Mining and Energy of Salta, strengthening their cooperative friendship. It is believed that there will be deeper exchanges and cooperation in the future!
Through this field trip, SMM and the delegation gained a deeper understanding of the development of Salta mining sector and a more profound insight into the market status, development trends, and existing issues of the South American lithium battery industry. They will continue to deepen cooperation with major enterprises to achieve complementary advantages and promote the development of the lithium battery industry.
