Market Overview for November 2024: As the year-end approaches, the sodium battery industry has witnessed a series of positive developments. Several cathode active material companies have successively announced signing agreements with downstream customers, with multiple supply and demand contracts at the kiloton level successfully concluded, preparing material reserves for the market demand and application scenarios in 2025.

November 2024 Market Overview: As the year-end approached, the sodium battery industry saw a series of positive developments. Many sodium battery cathode material companies successively announced signing agreements with downstream customers, with multiple thousand-ton supply contracts successfully concluded, preparing material reserves for market demand and application scenarios in 2025. However, in contrast, there were relatively few signing announcements for sodium battery anode materials, raising market concerns about the supply of hard carbon anode materials in 2025. Firstly, there were worries about whether there would be sufficient stable capacity to meet demand, and secondly, whether the price of anode materials could continue to decrease to enhance the market competitiveness of sodium batteries. In November, sodium battery projects totaling over 25 billion yuan were in progress, with sodium batteries and cathode materials dominating.

In November 2024, the sodium battery polyanion industry developed rapidly, with leading emerging companies accelerating capacity expansion and continuously signing orders for 2025. Meanwhile, the order volume in the layered oxide sector also increased significantly.

This month, 23 sodium battery projects were launched nationwide, with a total investment exceeding 25 billion yuan, up 40% MoM. These projects mainly focused on the production and research and development of sodium battery cells and sodium battery cathodes.

I. Sodium Battery Prices: Currently, market prices for sodium batteries are declining. However, prices for both layered oxide batteries and polyanion NFPP batteries remain higher than those of LFP batteries. Although NFS pouch batteries are priced close to LFP (energy storage type) batteries, they are mainly applied in the small power two-wheeler market, competing with lead-acid batteries, with no significant advantages yet.

II. Sodium Battery Industry Production: In November, production of both main materials and battery cells increased MoM, with sodium battery cathodes and cells increasing, while sodium battery anode production remained stable.

1. Cathode Materials:

In the sodium battery cathode material sector, among the three main directions and six sub-products, layered oxide O3 phase and polyanion NFPP maintained relatively high proportions of production. In November, sodium battery cathode production increased by nearly 1.3% MoM. With the approach of the Chinese New Year, demand is expected to weaken, and production is predicted to decrease MoM in December.



2. Hard Carbon Anode Materials

In the hard carbon anode material sector, hard carbon anode production increased significantly, up 32% MoM, but still faces challenges in improving energy density and reducing costs. Production is expected to continue growing until December, with a 16% MoM decrease.

In the domestic market, mainly biomass-based hard carbon anodes are being shipped.



3. Sodium Battery Electrolyte

Sodium battery electrolyte production increased by 9% MoM in November. In December, sodium battery cell production is expected to continue decreasing MoM. The main shipping companies include Capchem, Tinci, Kunlun, Langu, Nacreate, Fengshan, Jinhui, and other sodium battery electrolyte companies.


4. Sodium Battery Cells (Sodium-ion Batteries, Sodium Batteries)

With the approach of year-end, energy storage project progress weakened. November saw a 2% MoM increase, and in December, sodium battery cell production is expected to continue decreasing by 20% MoM.Overall, in November 2024, while there was market momentum, mass production still had a gap to bridge.
