[SMM Survey: Demand Peak Season Accelerates Blast Furnace Resumption, Pig Iron Production Rebounds in March]
According to SMM's tracking survey data, 18 blast furnaces underwent maintenance in February, while 25 blast furnaces resumed production, resulting in a daily increase in pig iron production of 77,800 mt. The daily average pig iron production increased by approximately 20,000 mt. In March, 9 additional blast furnaces are expected to undergo maintenance, while 25 blast furnaces are expected to resume production, with the daily average pig iron production projected to increase by approximately 34,300 mt...
According to SMM's tracking survey data, 18 blast furnaces underwent maintenance in February, with a daily pig iron reduction of 77,100 mt. The concentrated maintenance of blast furnaces remained in north China. Meanwhile, 25 blast furnaces resumed production, increasing daily pig iron production by 77,800 mt. Apart from north China, the number of blast furnaces resuming production was also significant in central, east, and south-west China. The impact from blast furnace maintenance in February decreased significantly MoM compared to January.
SMM data shows that blast furnace maintenance in February resulted in a net pig iron production reduction of 6.6118 million mt, 1.3295 million mt less than in January. The daily average pig iron production increased by approximately 20,000 mt.
According to SMM's tracking survey, 9 additional blast furnaces are planned for maintenance in March, with a daily pig iron production reduction of 42,700 mt. Conversely, 25 blast furnaces are expected to resume production, increasing daily pig iron production by 118,900 mt. Based on the current data, the total pig iron production impact from blast furnace maintenance in March is expected to be 6.2559 million mt, 355,900 mt less than in February. Considering February has 28 working days and March has 31, the daily average pig iron production in March is expected to increase by approximately 34,300 mt.
Entering March, affected by news of crude steel production cuts, iron ore prices have dropped significantly, and steel mill profits have improved. Additionally, with the arrival of the traditional peak season of "Golden March and Silver April," demand for construction materials and HRC is expected to continue growing. Against this backdrop, the enthusiasm of steel mills to resume blast furnace production will increase significantly. Therefore, SMM expects the actual number of blast furnaces resuming production in mid-to-late March to exceed current statistics, with pig iron production showing a significant increase MoM compared to February. SMM will continue to track the situation weekly.
